I truly believe that one of the saddest thing’s in society today is the fact that many people in the U.S can only speak one language. This can be for a variety of reasons, one of them being that second language classes, especially in high school, are seemed more like a joke and an “easy A” than a real class. Why is that? I can tell you with the upmost certainty that being able to communicate in a different language is much more valuable than y=mx+b will ever be. Every class you ever stressed over was a Science, Math, or English class, but never a second language class.
The U.S is such a melting pot of different cultures and traditions that companies are always looking for somebody who is bilingual. If you want to stand out in the job field, there is no better way to do it. Now there is absolutely nothing easy about learning a new language, in fact, it can be quite challenging, but the payoff is also extraordinary. I always have, and always will advocate that this is a priceless skill that I hope to see more of in society and taken much more seriously in classrooms for years to come.
