Women’s Soccer Has an Uncertain Yet Bright Future

By Austyn Ward

After a 4-12-1 season, the Lady Saints soccer team look to rebound in 2019. Among other struggles, head coach Lance Gordon had to step down after the season for personal reasons. This is a difficult situation for the team and they’re counting on new leadership to help them gain their footing next season.

The Lady Saints had a few bright spots including two NAIA scholar athletes, Bethany Weaver and Tyler Bybee. Along with these scholar athletes the Saints had two all-conference selections: Jamie Haecker and Kristina Nelson. Haecker, the senior from Murrieta, CA, led the team with five goals, thirteen points, and placed second in assists with three for the season. Nelson, the sophomore from Auburn, WA played in all 17 games for the Saints, racked up 122 saves, and posted a 2.72 GA average for a .722 save percentage. She also posted three shutouts of her four wins on the year.

The Saints did finish the season strong, ending with a 3-1 record in the last four games and the 2019 season looks promising with assistant coach Terry Kampa returning along with 16 returning players.
