This past Saturday marked the third game of the season for the Saints. After coming off a disappointing loss against Dakota Wesleyan, the Saints were ready to bounce back against the visiting Crown College Storm. It was a beautiful afternoon for football, despite some strong gusts of wind. Friends, families, and fans in the stands participated in the ceremonial making of the tunnel to welcome the Saints as they took the field right before kickoff.
The game started off exactly how coach Chuck Miesbauer hoped it would. The first drive, which lasted 4 plays and went for 62 yards, was capped off with a 31-yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Austin Eggl to senior wide receiver Logan Weisser. Innocent Okuh and Nathan Jones would each have a long touchdown run in the game, going for 37 yards and 72 yards, respectively. They were joined by fellow running back John Oldenkamp, who had two rushing touchdowns of his own. Eggl and Weiser would connect again later in the game for another score, this one for 14 yards. The Saints collected 495 yards of total Offense, with 155 passing yards, and 340 rushing yards.
The Saints defense held Crown College to only 300 yards of total offense, the sum of their 158 passing yards and 142 rushing yards. Redshirt freshman Jerod Boswell, playing in his first collegiate game, played a huge part in the Saints’ success against Crown. His 14 tackles, including a game-high 12 solo tackles, earned him the NSAA Defensive Player of the Week award.
Boswell wasn’t the only Saint to bring hardware home from the contest. Sophomore Jaiden Machuca took home NSAA Special Teams Player of the Week. Machuca was a perfect 6/6 on extra point attempts in the game, as well as sending four touchbacks in Crown’s direction on kickoffs.
The Saints are back in action after last week’s bye week this Saturday, September 22nd, to take on No. #13 Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota. Go out and support the boys in green and gold!
