The Presentation Saints volleyball team opened NSAA play this week at home against the Mayville State University Comets in the Strode Activity Center. The Saints started of the first set on fire with a 25-17 win to take a 1-0 lead, capped off by a big block from Amber Cline and Hailey Biel.
The second set was much closer, ending in a 25-23 win for the Saints to go up 2 sets to none. The Mayville Comets, however, would not go down without a fight. They showed a grittiness in the third set that they had yet to show in the match. Neither team was willing to back down, and eventually the Comets would claim the set 25-21 to push it to a fourth set.
The fourth set would come down to the wire. The Comets took a decisive lead, going up 21-16. Just when it looked like the Comets were going to close out the set and force the decisive fifth set, the Saints came roaring back. Kayla Wolfe started the rally with a kill, followed by Haylee Biel, who added her own back to back kills. With PC now trailing by 2, The Comets answered back with a point of their own, pushing the lead back to 3. The Saint’s Amber Cline and Olivia Stet fired off back to back kills, bringing the Saints within 1 point. After another Mayville point then back to back kills by Joely Roe and Olivia Stet, PC finally evened the score 23-23.
The Comets would strike next, retaking the lead and coming within one point of taking the set. The Saints were unbothered. A kill by Jade Gallagher tied things up once again. An error on Mayville’s Cassidy Miller gave the Saints a 25-24 lead, setting up the game point in their favor. Olivia Stet would secure the win with her only service ace of the night.
After all the excitement, it was Presentation College Saints over Mayville State University Comets 3-1. The victory brings their record to 8-4 on the season.
The Saints had four players record double-digits in kills. Haylee Biel led the team with a season-high 17, followed by Olivia Stet with 14, and Jade Gallagher and Kayla Wolfe added 12 and 11, respectively.
